NYC is tough. The rents continue to rise, worker’s wages continue to stagnate and our elected officials would rather criminalize us for houselessness than help us. For our particular community, we retain our dignity and hope for the future with dance music. We dance as a small act of retaliation against the harsh aggressions of our city, and in turn it soundtracks our lives.

Our first release of 2024, entitled “Enforced Vagrancy” comes to us from artist Chris Caiazzo aka Channel Lock. Alongside P.Leone, he co-founded E-Missions in 2017 but stepped away to pursue career opportunities outside of the dance music industry. “Enforced Vagrancy’s' formalist approach to Techno borders on minimalism, but injects an emotionality not usually ascribed to such a percussive genre. In such, it acts as more than just a soundtrack for dance floor abandon and doubles for the very pulse of the city.

Opening track “Borrowed Time” captures this NYC melancholia, easily taking us to real or imagined late nights on the above ground J train. “Capitulation” and “Succinct” are more street centric works, imbuing us with the hustle and bustle of busy crosswalks and glimmering skylines, moving us from night to day, respectively. “Almost Before” starts with a polyrhythm construction that twists with the tension of being underground in the tunnels. The EP reaches its apex with “Clearlight. Channel Lock’s final track is brimming with staccato snare-clap combinations that have a Jeff Mills inspired groove which feels mathematically calculated to make us shake.
